– To the Source of the Holy Ganga
A sacred pilgrimage with Mahamandaleshwar Swami Avatar Puri Ji
From 29 May to 13 June 2026, a group of European and Indian Yoga in Daily Life devotees, led by Mahamandaleshwar Swami Avatar Puri Ji, had the great privilege of experiencing an extraordinary and sacred Himalayan pilgrimage – Gangotri Yatra, organised by Deveshwar Travels, under the guidance of Niranjan Puri Ji, a long-time disciple of Vishwaguruji.

More than just a trekking expedition, the journey was a profound spiritual pilgrimage, following the sacred River Ganga from her revered holy banks to her glacial source in Gangotri, high in the Himalayas.
Rishikesh – Where the Pilgrimage Began
Inspired by a vision of environmental responsibility, fuel conservation, and a cleaner future, Mahamandaleshwar Swami Avatar Puri Ji began the sacred Gangotri Yatra with travelling by train, instead of by car. This conscious choice reflected the spirit of yoga – not only as a path of inner transformation but also as a way of living in harmony with nature.
The yatra commenced in Rishikesh, the world-renowned city of yoga and saints. On the very first evening, the group had the blessed opportunity to attend the world-renowned Ganga Aarti (worship/prayers) at Parmarth Niketan Ashram, led by Swami Chidanand Saraswati Ji.
The sight of countless ceremonial lamps, the sound of conch shells, and the sacred mantras echoing across the Ma Ganga, created a deeply uplifting atmosphere and offered a beautiful introduction to the days ahead.
Uttarkashi – Receiving Lord Shiva's Blessings
Following in the footsteps of Vishwaguruji's Himalayan Gangotri Yatra in 2014, Mahamandaleshwar Swami Sri Avatar Puri Ji and the Himalaya Yatra group arrived in Uttarkashi, also known as "Kashi of the North". Nestled on the banks of the Bhagirathi River, this ancient town has been a centre of meditation, spiritual learning and ascetic practice for centuries.
As countless pilgrims have done on their way to Gangotri, the group first sought the blessings of Lord Vishwanath at the revered Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple, one of the most important temples dedicated to Lord Shiva in the Himalayan region.
They also paid homage to the remarkable ancient Trishul, standing approximately six metres high and believed to be over 1,500 years old. Crafted from iron and copper and bearing ancient Sanskrit and Tibetan inscriptions, it is enshrined in the nearby Shakti Temple, directly opposite the main shrine.
Led by Mahamandaleshwar Swami Avatar Puri Ji, the pilgrims performed puja, abhisheka (ceremonies) and heartfelt prayers, receiving the blessings of God Shiva before continuing their sacred journey towards the source of the holy River Ganga.
Connecting Hearts Across the World
Throughout the pilgrimage, Mahamandaleshwar Swami Avatar Puri Ji also created many touching moments that reflected his warmth and care for every participant. On the way to Uttarkashi, he organised a small birthday celebration for one of the European devotees, making the occasion truly memorable.
At another point on the road to Gangotri, the group was informed that they were about to lose mobile phone reception and were advised to contact their loved ones. So, Mahamandaleshwar Swami Avatar Puri Ji chose to connect with the YIDL Global Chanting Group through a live Zoom call, sharing words of love, joy, and blessings while offering a glimpse of the breathtaking beauty of the Himalayas. Through this heartfelt connection, devotees around the world were able to experience the sacred spirit of the pilgrimage in real time.
Gangotri – Honouring Mother Ganga
On the third day, the group reached the small town of Gangotri. At over 3000 metres altitude, it is the seat of the goddess Ganga, and one of the holiest pilgrimage sites in India. The source of the River Ganga is the Bhagirathi River, originating from the Gangotri Glacier. Once the river confluences with the Alakananda River at a town called Devprayag, it finally acquires the name "Ganga" (or "Ganges" in English).
During their stay in Gangotri, they were warmly welcomed at Ishavasyam Ashram by Swami Raghavendranand Ji, whose guruji, Mahamandaleshwar Swami Viyoganand Ji, shares a long-standing friendship and spiritual bond with Vishwaguruji. That evening, in the presence of hundreds of pilgrims, Mahamandaleshwar Swami Avatar Puri Ji had the honour of leading the sacred Ganga Aarti on the banks of the Bhagirathi River.
The pilgrims also visited the revered Gangotri Temple, one of the four sacred shrines of the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit, where millions of devotees come each year to offer gratitude and seek the blessings of Mother Ganga.
Nearby stands the sacred Bhagirath Shila, where, according to ancient tradition, King Bhagiratha performed intense meditation to bring the celestial Ganga down to Earth for the liberation of his ancestors. It is here that God Shiva is said to have received the mighty force of the descending river in his matted locks, before allowing her waters to flow gently upon the Earth.
This visit became a profound spiritual preparation for the ascent to Gaumukh, the true source of the Bhagirathi River, 19km further upstream from Gangotri.
Walking Towards the Source
The following morning marked the beginning of the pilgrimage through the breathtaking Himalayan mountains.
After a 9km trek, the group reached Chirbasa, situated at an altitude of 3,545 metres, where they set up their camp, surrounded by fragrant Himalayan pines and majestic Deodar cedars, revered as the "Trees of the Gods. As evening descended, they gathered for puja, abhisheka and prayers led by Mahamandaleshwar Swami Avatar Puriji, immersed in the profound magnificence of the mountains and the divine presence of the holy river.
Many other trekkers, from India and around the world, were drawn to the group, curious about yoga and meditation. Under the guidance of Mahamandaleshwar Swami Avatar Puri Ji, some experienced meditation for the first time.
After resting at Chirbasa, the pilgrimage continued to Bhojbasa (3,775 metres), the last campsite before the source of the Ganga. As the landscape became increasingly rugged and dramatic, the anticipation of reaching the sacred glacier grew ever stronger.
Gaumukh – At the Birthplace of the Ganga
Crossing the Bhagirathi River, the group finally arrived at Gaumukh, the glacier from which the Bhagirathi – the principal source of the Ganga – emerges.
For countless generations, pilgrims have travelled to this sacred place to honour the river that symbolises purification, grace and spiritual awakening for millions of people. Standing before the glacier, surrounded by silence and immense natural beauty, was an unforgettable spiritual experience.
Mahamandaleshwar Swami Avatar Puri Ji took a sacred bath in the ice-cold waters of the Bhagirathi River, offering prayers in deep devotion.
Tapovan – The Land of Silence
The journey continued beyond Gaumukh with a demanding climb over rocky moraines and steep mountain slopes to Tapovan, located at an altitude of 4,330 metres.
After several hours of ascent, the breathtaking panorama revealed itself: the magnificent peaks of Shivling, Meru, Bhagirathi, and numerous other snow-covered Himalayan giants, rising majestically above the glaciers.
Three unforgettable days were spent in Tapovan. The pilgrims climbed towards the snowy slopes beneath Mount Shivling, meditated in complete silence, and absorbed the extraordinary spiritual atmosphere of one of the Himalayas' most sacred landscapes. And on top of all that, Mahamandaleshwar Swami Avatar Puri Ji inspired the pilgrims to join the daily yoga practice of Yoga in Daily Life, The System.
Mahamandaleshwar Swami Avatar Puri Ji shared a heartwarming meeting with Swami Anand Saraswati Ji, who has lived in Tapovan continuously for the past nineteen years. In his humble ashram, conversations, prayers and bhajans unfolded naturally, offering a rare glimpse into a life wholly dedicated to spiritual practice, simplicity and inner realisation.
During his walks through the area, Mahamandaleshwar Swami Avatar Puri Ji noticed an abandoned cave beneath the Shivling peak that had once been the home of a saint. Left neglected after her departure, the cave had become dirty and untended.
As purification is the very nature of a saint, Mahamandaleshwar Swami Avatar Puri Ji organised the cleaning of the cave. Once purified, he led the entire group into the cave, where they performed a sacred puja and offered heartfelt prayers for the health and well-being of Vishwaguruji.
In Tapovan, at a sacred Shiva Lingam, Mahamandaleshwar Swami Avatar Puri Ji performed a special puja, offering prayers to God Shiva in the profound silence and spiritual atmosphere of the Himalayas.
On one occasion, the pilgrims set out from the Tapovan camp towards the majestic Mount Shivling, ascending to the point where the snow-covered slopes begin.
“Walking in the footsteps of sages, surrounded by glaciers, mountains and the sacred source of Ma Ganga, every step became a prayer and every breath a meditation,”
shared Mahamandaleshwar Swami Avatar Puriji.
Returning Along the Sacred River
On the return journey, the group once again stopped in Uttarkashi before concluding the pilgrimage at Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar.
There, together with hundreds of thousands of devotees, they participated in the magnificent evening Ganga Aarti, held during a rare and highly auspicious celestial alignment that occurs only once every three years. Through the thoughtful arrangements of Mahamandaleshwar Swami Avatar Puri Ji, the group was blessed to be seated in the front row on the sacred banks of Mother Ganga, allowing them to experience the ceremony from an exceptionally close and privileged vantage point.
As sacred mantras filled the air and countless floating lamps drifted upon the river, the atmosphere became a profound expression of devotion, leaving an indelible impression on every pilgrim.
A Journey to the Source – and Within
The Gangotri Yatra began and concluded on the banks of the sacred Ganga. Following her waters to their glacial source, the pilgrims travelled through places that have inspired yogis, sages and seekers for thousands of years.
As Swami Shivanand Ji sings in the bhajan, Guru Caraṇõ Mẽ Aṛasaṭha Tīratha Hē, Vo Veda Purānā Mẽ Gāte Hē – "At the guru's lotus feet are all sixty-eight sacred places of pilgrimage, as proclaimed in the Vedas and Puranas", Mahamandaleshwar Swami Avatar Puri Ji completed the Gangotri Yatra at OM Ashram, offering his love and deepest respects at the lotus feet of Vishwaguruji and receiving His blessings.
This pilgrimage was far more than a journey through the Himalayas. It was a journey towards silence, simplicity and one's own inner Self.
The pilgrims expressed heartfelt gratitude to Mahamandaleshwar Swami Avatar Puri Ji for his inspiring leadership, unwavering encouragement and compassionate guidance throughout the pilgrimage; to Vishwaguruji, whose blessings empowered Mahamandaleshwar Swami Avatar Puri Ji to continue his mission and spread the light as his successor; and to Mother Ganga, whose sacred presence accompanied every step of this unforgettable spiritual journey.
